Toddler's Diarrhea
Loose stools many times a day in a happy, growing toddler. Often benign, sometimes not. Either way, you deserve a clear answer.
Toddler's diarrhea, also called chronic nonspecific diarrhea of childhood, causes several loose or watery stools per day in children ages 1 to 5 who are otherwise growing and thriving. Excess juice and sugary drinks are common drivers.
Dr. Mendez evaluates these kids to make sure nothing important is being missed, then puts together a simple diet and follow-up plan so families do not have to live in the bathroom.

Frequently asked
Is too much juice really the cause?
Often, yes. Excess fruit juice and sugary drinks deliver more sugar than the small intestine can absorb, pulling water into the colon. Reducing juice is one of the most effective changes.
Should we cut out dairy?
Not as a first step. Most toddlers with this pattern do not have lactose intolerance. We adjust dairy only when the history suggests it.
When is this not toddler's diarrhea?
Blood in stool, weight loss, slowed growth, persistent belly pain, or symptoms starting after age 5 all push us to look harder for celiac, IBD, infection, or malabsorption.
