Procedure Deep Dive
Pediatric Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
A focused, lower-prep exam of the rectum and sigmoid colon when the question is bleeding, inflammation, or limited disease.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy examines the rectum and lower portion of the colon. When the clinical question is rectal bleeding, suspected proctitis, or surveillance of known left-sided disease, it can deliver the answer without a full colonoscopy.
Dr. Mendez recommends sigmoidoscopy only when it is the right tool, and personally performs the procedure with concierge coordination from pre-op through results.
Conditions & concerns we address
Rectal Bleeding
Evaluation of bright red blood per rectum when the source is likely distal.
Suspected Proctitis
Inflammation limited to the rectum, including allergic and infectious causes.
UC Surveillance
Targeted follow-up for known left-sided ulcerative colitis.
Polyps
Evaluation and removal of juvenile or other distal polyps.
Anastomotic Checks
Assessment after lower GI surgery when full colonoscopy is not needed.
How Dr. Mendez approaches care
- Pre-procedure visit walks through indication, prep, and recovery in detail.
- Lighter bowel prep than full colonoscopy when clinically appropriate.
- Procedure performed at accredited pediatric facilities with pediatric anesthesia.
- Findings reviewed with you immediately after recovery.
- Personal follow-up call when biopsy results return, with a written plan.
Signs it's time for a consultation
- A child with rectal bleeding without a clear external cause.
- Suspected food protein-induced proctitis in an infant.
- Known distal IBD that needs a focused look rather than a full colonoscopy.
- Concerns about a juvenile polyp.
- A second opinion on whether full colonoscopy is really needed.
