What to Expect at Your First Visit

A clear, step-by-step guide to your child's first pediatric gastroenterology appointment with Dr. Mendez.

During the Visit

What happens at the appointment

Dr. Mendez begins every visit by listening. She will ask detailed questions about your child's symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect eating, sleep, school, and daily life. There are no rushed conversations here.

Next comes a gentle abdominal examination. For younger children, Dr. Mendez uses distraction and age-appropriate techniques to keep the exam comfortable. She will explain what she is doing in plain language so your child feels safe and involved.

If further testing is needed, such as blood work, stool studies, or imaging, Dr. Mendez will explain exactly why each test is recommended, what it involves, and how quickly results will be available. For children who may need endoscopy, she will walk your family through the entire process and coordinate everything for you.
